LONGHOUSE BUFFET
Mayetta, Kansas
H2B architects was asked to redesign an existing buffet facility to be named "The Longhouse Buffet.” The original buffet was built over 10 years ago while operating as a Harrah’s Casino property. The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, also known as the “Keepers of the Fire,” acquired the management of the facility and desired the space to reflect their historical values as well as respect and honor their tribal lands and rich cultural heritage. Natural elements found in the Kansas Prairie are incorporated into the design, using natural materials such as limestone, wheat grass panels, and elements of tribal images throughout the space. A ten-foot long fireplace is the center of attention in the dining space, signifying the importance of fire as a tribal symbol. Another focal point in the serving area is an acrylic floral art piece internally illuminated with LED lights that portrays the tribe’s floral images used throughout time on baskets, clothing, and other items. The space is crowned with a symbolic longhouse structure constructed of stone, metal, and translucent ceiling panels woven to mimic a basket weave pattern filtered with light.
